As a wedding expert, I’ve seen couples pour their hearts into every detail of their big day, but few investments are as timeless as a custom wedding painting. Whether it’s a live painter capturing your first dance in real-time or a post-wedding commission of your favorite portrait, this piece will become a cherished family heirloom. But before you sign the artist's contract, you have to answer one critical question: What size canvas do we need?
1. The Standard Wedding Canvas Sizes
Most wedding painters and artists work within a few predictable, standard dimensions (measured in inches).
18" x 24" — The Intimate Choice
Best for: Small apartments, gallery walls, or displaying on a shelf or mantle.
Detail limits: Best focused entirely on the couple. Because the canvas space is limited, trying to add multiple details in the background can make the painting feel cluttered.
24" x 30" — The Sweet Spot
Best for: The most popular size for live wedding paintings. It is large enough to feel like a focal point but versatile enough to fit above almost any future home.
Detail limits: Safely accommodates the couple plus a beautifully detailed background environment (like your ceremony arch or reception venue) and even a handful of recognizable VIP guests.
24" x 36" (or larger) — The Statement Piece
Best for: Hanging solo above a standard couch, a bed, or a large dining room buffet.
Detail limits: Excellent if you want an grand, sweeping architectural view of your venue, your dress and faces clearly recognizable or if you are paying the artist to include a larger number of recognizable wedding guests.
Choosing the right size is a delicate balance between artistic detail and your home’s interior design.
For many couples, an 24"x30" canvas is the absolute sweet spot. It offers a generous landscape for the artist to paint a detailed backdrop—like the sweeping architecture of your venue, the romantic glow of your reception strings lights or the beautiful floral wedding arch — while keeping the focus squarely on you. It’s large enough to demand attention but versatile enough to move with you from your first apartment to a forever home.
If you are tight on wall real estate or love the look of a gallery wall with a group of pictures, an 18" x 24" is an elegant choice. Just keep in mind that a smaller canvas limits background details; it’s best reserved for close-up portraits of just the newlyweds. On the flip side, if you want a true statement piece to hang solo above your living room sofa, upgrade to an at least 24" x 36". This grander scale gives the artist room to include recognizable faces of your VIP guests and wedding party.
2. Match the Size to Your Interior Design
Before committing to a canvas size, think about the wall it will eventually live on. A good rule of thumb used by interior designers is that artwork should take up roughly 50% to 75% of the available wall space that isn't covered by furniture, plants, windows or molding.
If you plan to hang the painting above a piece of furniture (like a sofa or console table), look for a size that is about two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the furniture below it.
The Detail Level & Guest Count: If you are booking a live painter, ask them how many "recognizable faces" they recommend per canvas size. Many artists charge scaled rates because painting a realistic miniature version of your grandmother into a 16x20 frame is significantly harder than doing so on a 24x36 canvas.
Framing Adds to the Size: Keep in mind that if you plan to frame your painting later, a frame will add anywhere from 1 to 4 inches to the overall width and height of the piece.
Travel and Logistics: If you are having a destination wedding, a massive 24x36 or 30x40 canvas can be incredibly difficult and expensive to ship or fly home safely. An 18x24 is much easier to transport.
Pro-Tip: If you are stuck between two sizes, use painter's tape to map out the exact dimensions of both options on your wall at home. Leave it up for a few days to see how the scale feels in your actual living space before telling your artist.
