Wedding Painter Price Calculations in North Carolina and elsewhere in the USA

I will use as an example a recent wedding I painted for Meredith and Tristan in Sanford, NC.

A live wedding painting is one of the most magical additions you can bring to your big day. Watching a blank canvas transform into a beautiful reception scene right in front of your eyes creates an unforgettable experience for your guests. Plus, you walk away with a priceless family heirloom.

The style of their wedding was country and it took place a the beautiful John B Gathering Place. This wedding venue even has a beautiful little pond with a fountain in the middle to add to the charm of the manicured scenery.

If you are planning a wedding in North Carolina—whether at a rustic barn in Asheville, a historic mansion in Raleigh, or a coastal venue in Wilmington—you might be wondering how artists price this unique service.

Several key factors determine the final price of a live wedding painting.

1. The Artist’s Experience and Demand

Just like photographers and coordinators, a painter’s background heavily impacts their rates.
Even though I am an established artist, with 20+ years of experience, I want to keep my rates affordable therefore, I keep my prices at the lower end or the range. The national average today is between $2,200 - $10,000. Of course there are some other factors, which I list below that will determine the price. To get a closer idea, you are welcome to compare my price packages here.

2. Canvas Size

Size matters when it comes to fine art. Tristan & Meredith requested a medium size canvas, which is 24x30, and one of the most popular sizes my couples choose. A small 16x20 canvas requires less time and material than a grand, 24x36 or 30x40 statement piece. Larger canvases require significantly more paint, structural prep work, and more work in general, which translate to the hours spent painting it.

3. Detail and Scene Complexity

What do you want captured on the canvas? This particular couple asked for the first kiss to be painted, front of the cross. They also wanted me to paint some of the foreground and floral decoration. I even managed to include some of the pond and water fountain in the background.

A painting focused entirely on the newlyweds during their first dance takes less time than a highly detailed scene that includes the wedding party, parents, and an intricate venue architecture. More faces and finer details mean the artist will spend many extra hours finishing the piece in their studio after the wedding. Some artists finish the painting at the wedding, but most of the time those are more impressionistic versions of the couple and wedding instead of realistic paintings.

4. Inclusion of Pets

Meredith has a dog, her name is Kona, and she is like a family member for her. They even brought her to the wedding, “dressed” with a small flower arrangement in her collar.
It was natural that they wanted her in the painting.

Many couples want to include their furry friends in their special day, and sometimes the venue doesn't allow animals. Asking an artist to add a dog or cat into the painting is a popular request, but it usually comes with an add-on fee. Because pets aren't actually sitting still at the altar, the painter must use reference photos and dedicate extra studio time to seamlessly blend them into the scene.
That is what I did when I painted Kona into the picture, and everyone loved it!

5. Travel and Logistics within NC

While North Carolina has a thriving community of local creatives, travel logistics still play a role. If you hire a Charlotte-based artist for a wedding on the Outer Banks, you will need to account for travel fees. These fees typically cover mileage, drive time, and overnight lodging.

I myself incude a travel fee, if the wedding is a few hour distance away. The lodging after the wedding is also important, because I would not feel safe driving several hours home in the middle of the night.

The best way to get an idea what your wedding painting would cost, is to find a wedding painter near you whose style you really like and inquire about the options, exact prices and availability.
